Why do many people still use 1,024 MB = 1 GB?
Many people still say 1,024 MB = 1 GB because early computer systems organized memory and storage using powers of two. Since 1,024 equals 210 and is close to 1,000, the metric prefixes kilobyte, megabyte, and gigabyte were historically reused for binary quantities.
This created two competing interpretations:
- Decimal definition: 1 kB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, and 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes.
- Traditional binary interpretation: 1 KB was often treated as 1,024 bytes, 1 MB as 1,024 KB, and 1 GB as 1,024 MB.
To remove this ambiguity, dedicated binary prefixes were introduced:
- 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes
- 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB = 1,048,576 bytes
- 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes
Under current standards, GB and MB are decimal units, so 1 GB = 1,000 MB. The precise binary statement is 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. Therefore, saying “1 GB = 1,024 MB” mixes the historical binary convention with modern decimal unit names.
The older usage remains widespread because it was used for decades in operating systems, memory specifications, programming documentation, and technical education. Some software may also calculate capacity using binary values while displaying decimal-looking labels such as MB or GB, which reinforces the confusion.
This distinction explains why a storage device can appear smaller when viewed in some operating systems. For example, a manufacturer-defined 1 TB drive contains 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. That same number of bytes equals approximately 931.32 GiB. No storage has disappeared—the capacity is simply being expressed with a different unit.
For accurate conversions, use kB, MB, GB, and TB for decimal powers of 1,000, and use KiB, MiB, GiB, and TiB for binary powers of 1,024.
